Soundbites from Aqib Talib

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – On Thursday, cornerback Aqib Talib met with reporters for the first time since the Patriots acquired him in a trade.

Here are a few soundbites:

Expectations with the Patriots. “Just coming in to learn as quick as possible man, and just work hard and see what I can do to help the team.”

On helping right away. “I’m just coming in, and doing what is asked to be done. If that’s help right away, it’s help right away. If it’s help down the road, it’s help down the road.”

Transition to the Patriots. “I did my best to stay in pretty good shape [during suspension]. I’m coming in early, staying late, just trying to learn the system. It’s been all right.”

How Patriots teammates have received him. “The guys have been great, man. They’ve embraced me and I love the team already.”

What it’s like to be on a team where the perception is he’s needed. “Like I said, I’ll let you guys deal with all the perception and all that. I’m just coming in and doing what’s asked of me, and trying to learn as quick as possible, to see what I can do to help.”

If it’s important for him to have a fresh start. “I take it one day at a time. Until I was traded, I was a Buc. Now I’m a Patriot. Like I said, I’m just taking it one day at a time, one step at a time.”

Surprised by the trade? “Of course, you’re always surprised when you get traded. But it’s football, man. I’ve seen it happen before, so I was surprised for a minute, but kind of not surprised.”

How he views his move to the Patriots. “It’s a great opportunity, man, with a great organization. Just to come in and do what I can to help win some ballgames.”

On if Bill Belichick told him the slate was wiped clean. “We kind of just talked straight football, man. He didn’t bring up the past, I didn’t bring up the past. He didn’t bring up the future. I didn’t bring up the future. We’re just kind of taking it one day at a time.”

His self-scouting report on how he fits best. “Whatever’s asked, man. I’ve played man before, I’ve played zone before. It’s my fifth year in the league. I’ve played almost every coverage there is to play. Whatever they ask me to play, that’s what I’m going to play.”

Adjusting to the system; is it like anything he’s experienced? “Like I said, for a corner, man, you can almost play for any team. It’s football. You go out and play one of eight coverages. I’ve done it all before. I’m doing what’s called out there.”

On how he's describe himself off the field. "I'm a competitor, man, on the field. That's kind of what we're talking about now, just football, man."
