Rookie RB Shavers waived by Pats

The Patriots have waived rookie running back Akeem Shavers, the team announced.

Shavers had been claimed on waivers from the Buccaneers on May 7. He was a longshot to make the final roster.

The 23-year-old Shavers played at Purdue for two seasons after transferring from Tyler Junior College. In 2012, he totaled 871 rushing yards on 181 attempts, with six touchdowns.

With open roster spots, it makes sense to think that the Patriots will consider signing another running back as the release of Shavers leaves them with just five players at the position, one of whom (Brandon Bolden) has been sidelined because of injury.
