Belichick lands atop coaching list

With the start of training camps just around the corner, CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco has generated his list of the top head coaches in the NFL, ranking the 32 sideline leaders.

There's a familiar face atop it, as Prisco places Patriots head coach Bill Belichick at the top of his list.

Prisco writes: "He has taken the Patriots to the playoffs in 10 of his 13 seasons with the team and has three Super Bowl victories in that time. He has a .726 winning percentage with the Patriots, which helps to erase most of the memories of his Browns years. It helps that he's had Tom Brady, but he's a sensational coach, even if he can sometimes come across as an ogre. With all the off-field issues facing his team now, he might have to be at his best in 2013."

While Belichick's teams have fallen short in recent playoff trips, there's little arguing his consistency and track record. The Patriots have endured personnel turnover, coaching departures, significant injuries to critical players and the constraints of the free agency era to establish one of the most successful decade-plus runs of success in recent NFL history.

Given the unusual offseason, Belichick and his staff face unique challenges leading into the 2013 season.

Just behind Belichick on Prisco's list is Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, the man whose teams have upended Belichick's in two Super Bowl appearances. That gives Coughlin a case to be the top coach in the NFL, but Belichick's sustained success over 13 years (and three Super Bowl wins) ultimately allowed him to edge out Coughlin on Prisco's list.
