The Patriots announced the signing of rookie cornerback Justin Green on Sunday. The club now has 89 players under contract, with one open spot on the 90-man roster.
The 22-year-old Green began his collegiate career at Illinois as a running back, before moving to defensive back for his final three seasons.
Green made 29 starts in his final three seasons, totaling 76 tackles, 13 passes defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. In 2012 as a senior, he played in 12 games with 11 starts at cornerback and finished with 36 total tackles and six passes defensed.
Green (5-11, 195) joins former Illinois teammate Tavon Wilson in the Patriots' defensive backfield. He's a longshot to earn a roster spot, but builds depth at a time when there is uncertainty surrounding the availability and status of starting right cornerback Alfonzo Dennard.
