What a Google search tells us about Pats

Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight.com blog, which is part of ESPN, has a post Friday morning that views the popularity of professional sports teams through the lens of Google searches.

As expected, the Patriots rate near the top of the charts.

But not as high as the Red Sox.

"It’s either the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox," Silver writes. "Each generates about 30 percent more Google searches worldwide than the most popular NFL team, the Dallas Cowboys, and almost 40 percent more than the most popular NBA team, the Los Angeles Lakers."

From an NFL perspective, the Patriots rank fourth in global Google searches behind the Cowboys, Packers and Eagles.

In this space, we often cite television ratings as a barometer that highlights the Patriots' popularity in relation to the Red Sox. Football usually dominates in that area.

The Google scoreboard, according to Silver, tells a bit of a different story.
