Pregame notes: Ortiz on war path

BOSTON -- It was team picture day at Fenway Park this afternoon, and things were relatively quiet.

Well, it was quiet until Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz interrupted Terry Francona’s daily press conference and was clearly upset about something.

He opened the door to the interview room on the mezzanine level and said to Francona: “I’m [expletive] pissed. We need to have a talk, you and me.”

Francona responded: “I’ll be there in a minute.”

“OK,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz was not upset with Francona, but rather a decision by the official scorekeeper during Wednesday’s game against the Cleveland Indians.

In the bottom of the first inning, Ortiz lined a shot to left-center field, scoring Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Youkilis. Ortiz was credited with only one RBI on the play because the scorer indicated that Youkilis scored on a fielding error by Indians left-fielder Austin Kearns.

That was Ortiz’s issue.

After Francona’s media session, he and Ortiz were talking in the manager’s office. A few minutes later, Ortiz stood at his locker stall and when asked why he was so upset, he passed on making any comments about the play in question.

The Red Sox can appeal the call with Major League Baseball.

Currently, Ortiz is hitting .289 with 69 RBIs and it’s no secret he wants to reach 100 RBIs for the second consecutive season.

Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew (shoulder) is improving but he’s still a few days away from swinging a bat, according to Francona.

“He’s been working out like crazy,” Francona said. “He’s on the treadmill, been shagging balls and all that stuff but hasn’t started hitting yet.”

Drew has been on the DL since July 26 (retroactive to July 20) with an impingement in his left shoulder.

Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks (back) was able to play catch again today. He threw with Red Sox pitching coach Curt Young as trainer Mike Reinold looked on.

“He had a good day. He was a little sore after yesterday, but today was another good day,” Francona said. “We’ll see how he reacts tomorrow.”

Jenks has spent three stints on the DL this season, twice due to back tightness.
