BALTIMORE -- Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz will not pitch in Wednesday’s season finale no matter the situation, said Red Sox manager Terry Francona.
“Because we lost [Monday] night he will most likely go back down to Florida. He has to,” Francona said.
The fact that Buchholz will not face major-league hitters before the end of the season does not mean he won’t be used in the postseason if the Red Sox are able to get there.
The right-hander has been on the disabled list since June because of a stress fracture in his lower back, but his rehab has progressed well of late and he believes he’ll be available to pitch in some capacity in the playoffs.
He tossed 18 pitches in one inning of an instructional league game on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.
“It went good but it was nasty weather,” Buchholz said. “Everything went good and nothing hurt.”
