After 15 seasons with the Boston Red Sox, catcher and team captain Jason Varitek is hanging up his mask. Tek made his tearful farewell in front of family, friends and media on Thursday night from Fenway South in Fort Myers, Fla.
"Going into this -- your last week," Varitek said, before pausing to regain his composure. "This last week leading up to this is probably one of the hardest weeks that you go through as a player. And to have you guys [teammates] here, I really appreciate it."
Varitek continues to thank the Sox coaches, training staff, support staff and others who turned out Thursday to show their support and who helped him during his career.
"I'm here to officially announce that I'm retiring as a player. And after months of deliberating what to do, I decided that it's best for me and my family that I retire, that I retire a Red Sox."
