Both players were backdated to March 26, the earliest date a team can place a player on the DL, meaning both will be eligible to be activated by April 11.
The move buys Bonser time to build up arm strength after undergoing reconstructive surgery a year ago last February, while Lowrie, who originally fell ill March 11, will need considerably more time to be ready. Lowrie also needs to prove to himself, and the club, how much activity his surgically repaired left wrist can withstand.
Bonser figures to claim a job in the Sox bullpen, a position that is likely to go to Scott Atchison at the start of the season. The Sox may also entertain trade offers for him, as numerous clubs are still looking for bullpen help.
