Saltalamacchia leaves after freak injury

PHILADELPHIA -- Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia left Friday night's game in the fifth inning after a pitch from Red Sox starter Daniel Bard struck Philadelphia batter Ty Wigginton and ricocheted, striking Saltalamacchia in the left side of his head.

Saltalamacchia lay prone for several minutes while being attended to by trainer Rick Jameyson, then got to his feet and left the field under his own power.

He was replaced by Kelly Shoppach.

The club announced in the bottom of the seventh that Saltalamacchia left with a laceration of his left ear.
