Appearing on "Baseball Tonight" before tonight's Red Sox-Yankees series finale, ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes said he expects Carl Crawford will be shut down to undergo Tommy John surgery (video above).
A source said Crawford will have the surgery Tuesday, while Bobby Valentine had said earlier Sunday that Crawford and the team will discuss his status on Monday.
Edes said Crawford felt obligated to play through the torn ulnar collateral ligament, but that he is playing in significant pain and is concerned about his long-term future.
Also in the video, Edes describes the atmosphere in the Red Sox clubhouse. "Anger, frustration, disappointment with performance and a real level of exhaustion with the amount of white noise that has surrounded this team with all the chaos that has gone on off the field."
Edes also describes the lack of clarity as to who is running the Red Sox on a day-to-day basis, and says the "uncertainty in the lines of command have contributed to the sense of chaos" and contributed to the frustration in the clubhouse.
