Ellsbury remains out of the lineup

BOSTON – Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was originally penciled into Sunday’s lineup as the starting center fielder and leadoff hitter for the series finale against the Baltimore Orioles Sunday at Fenway.

However, that lineup card wasn’t posted for too long before Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine tore it up and made a new one with Scott Podsednik in center and batting first.

Although he played last Thursday in Tampa, Ellsbury has not started the last three games due to an undisclosed injury.

“I was waiting on Ells to get here and work out and see how he felt,” Valentine said. “He said he felt all right, but wanted to go out and throw just to make sure, so I put him in the lineup, thinking that the first comment was the one that was going to be the lasting comment, but after throwing he decided that he needs another day.”

Ellsbury started the first seven games of the season before suffering a right shoulder injury on April 13 against the Tampa Bay Rays. He missed the next 79 games before he was activated on July 13. He’s played only 70 games this season and has a .277 average with 4 homers, 26 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.
