Pedroia confirms broken finger

The Red Sox said Friday night that second baseman Dustin Pedroia has an avulsion fracture of his left ring finger and likely won't play again this season. After Monday's 10-2 loss, the Sox have games Tuesday and Wednesday in New York versus the Yankees, who lead the Orioles by one game in the AL East with two to play.

Pedroia confirmed that the finger is broken in a text message to ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes, but wasn't ready to rule out playing, saying he'd see how it felt Tuesday and "try to get out there.”
