Welcome to the GM meetings

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Baseball's general managers meetings have officially begun, and Boston Red Sox GM Ben Cherington is here, prepared to lay the groundwork for many possible deals, both on the trade front and through the free-agent market, in an attempt to build the 2013 roster.

The Red Sox are looking for another starting pitcher, both corner outfield positions, a first baseman and another utility infielder.

There’s plenty on Cherington’s to-do list and he’ll try to at least make some progress on it during the two days here. He’s scheduled to meet with the media at some point later today. So for now, I'm off to comb the hotel lobby for other GMs and agents.

Oh, and by the way, it’s supposed to be in the mid-90s today in Southern California.
