Good morning from the winter meetings

NASHVILLE -- Good morning from the Opryland Hotel as baseball’s winter meetings officially begin.

The rumors have already begun churning and it didn’t take long for the Boston Red Sox to scratch at least one player off their list: First baseman James Loney as signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays this morning.

Not that Loney really ever had a chance of staying in Boston after the Red Sox acquired him as part of the nine-player trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers last August. Defensively, Loney handled himself well. Offensively, he only hit .230 with two homers and eight RBIs in 30 games for the Red Sox.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington is shopping for a first baseman and there are a few possible options he’s focused on, including free agents Mike Napoli, Adam LaRoche and Nick Swisher. It’ll be interesting to see how these meetings unfold for Boston.

Make sure to check back often as colleague Gordon Edes and I will have updates throughout the day. You can also follow ESPN.com’s live Winter Meetings chat throughout the week for live updates.
