FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said he expects DH David Ortiz to be a spectator along with first baseman Mike Napoli in the early part of the exhibition schedule, but remains optimistic that both will be ready for the start of the regular season.
"We don't have an exact date, but our expectation is that (Ortiz) probably won't play in the first games," Cherington said Saturday, "but again, he looks great, he's in great shape, as everyone saw, he took BP, took some ground balls, doesn't seem like he should be that long.
"But we'll probably play cautious with both guys. We've got a fair amount in camp. We're much more concerned about the 162-game schedule than we are the spring training schedule, as much as everyone wants to see them out there."
