Ortiz lined up as All-Star; Pedroia trails

With All-Star voting closing at midnight Thursday, David Ortiz seems assured of winning a starting spot as designated hitter.

Ortiz leads the Rangers' Lance Berkman, 4,398,197 to 2,004,388, in balloting.

Dustin Pedroia is the only other Red Sox player with a realistic shot of starting, but he trails the Yankees' Robinson Cano by 1.1 million votes (3,974,322 to 2,838,129).

Based on the Wins Above Replacement metric, Pedroia should get the nod at second base. Pedroia leads AL second basemen with a WAR of 4.3, which Cleveland's Jason Kipnis second at 3.6 and Cano third at 3.1.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Pedroia's advantage comes on defense, where statistically he has saved 11 runs. Cano grades out as a negative defender.
