OAKLAND -- Red Sox manager John Farrell said shortstop Stephen Drew will play two games in Portland for the Double-A Sea Dogs, then rejoin the Red Sox for Saturday’s game in Fenway Park against the New York Yankees.
Drew will serve as DH on Thursday, then play short on Friday, and assuming all goes well, will be activated Saturday, which means Jose Iglesias will return to playing third.
Drew has missed the last 15 games with a strained right hamstring. He was eligible to come off the DL Sunday, but the Sox elected to have him serve a brief rehab stint first.
At the time he was hurt, Drew had emerged from a prolonged slump, batting .364 (12-for-33) with 4 doubles and 3 triples in a nine-game span. The Sox have gone 9-6 in his absence. He also missed most of spring training and the first seven games of the season with concussive symptoms.
Overall, he has posted a .233/.313/.409 slash line, but has committed just three errors at shortstop.
