Leyland: Should've reminded closer on Ortiz

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland on Tuesday told reporters he regrets not telling Joaquin Benoit to pitch carefully to David Ortiz, whose eighth-inning grand slam on the first pitch the closer threw him tied Game 2 5-5. The Red Sox would go on to win it in the bottom of the ninth to tie the American League Championship Series at a game apiece.

"I made a mistake that I take full responsibility for,” Leyland said. “I should've reminded [Benoit] that we didn't want to Ortiz to beat us.”

With two outs in the inning and the bases full, Benoit unleashed a changeup that caught a little too much of the plate and ended up landing in the Red Sox bullpen, just out of the reach of a leaping Torii Hunter.

How ill Detroit bounce back from such a dramatic loss? Game 3 of the ALCS is Tuesday afternoon in Detroit.

"I don't look for any carryover (from Game 2),” Leyland said. “I didn't see any carryover with the Boston Red Sox yesterday.”
