Peavy: Finger a 'nonissue'

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Jake Peavy's second day in camp commenced Saturday without the tape that wrapped around the palm of his right hand and ring finger. But the condition remains irksome enough, Peavy said, that he might be limited the first few days in camp.

"It's OK," he said. "Just got some irritation that we're going to monitor and take it easy for a few days to make sure it gets out of there. It won't be any more of a problem."

Peavy, who joked the day before that he'd hurt the finger falling off his duckboat, said he's not sure what is causing the irritation.

"We're not really sure," he said. "I did take a ball off the hand, but we're not really sure how the irritation [started]. It's just in my ring finger on my right hand. You want to be cautious and knock those things out early in camp and not let it be an issue. It's really a nonissue."

Pitchers and catchers are scheduled for physicals Sunday, noted manager John Farrell, so perhaps more will be known about the condition then.
