And so it begins ... officially

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Good morning from the Fort, where under a cloudless sky, Red Sox pitchers and catchers have taken the field for their first official workout of the 2014 season.

As usual the pitchers are divided into groups, three groups lined up to throw bullpen side sessions, three groups engaged in activities known best by their acronym, PFPs, for Pitchers Fielding Practice.

The pitchers scheduled to throw Monday are:

Felix Doubront, Noe Ramirez, Allen Webster, Henry Owens, Burke Badenhop, Anthony Ranaudo, Brandon Workman, Rubby de la Rosa, Drake Britton, Dalier Hinojosa, Miguel Celestino, Alex Wilson and Matt Barnes. Owens, Ranaudo and Barnes are the highly regarded prospects in their first camp.

Their morning is divided into four sessions: Long toss, controlling the running game, PFP’s 3-1’s (covering first base on ground balls), and their bullpens. When they’re finished, they do some conditioning work.

The three other groups will be working on comebackers, covering first, and bunts. Those groups include: John Lackey, Jon Lester, Jake Peavy, Clay Buchholz, Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa, Andrew Miller, Edward Mujica, Brayan Villareal, Jose Mijares, Francisco Cordero and Tommy Layne.

The Sox have six catchers in camp: Dan Butler, Ryan Lavarnway, A.J. Pierzynski, David Ross and Christian Vazquez are all on the roster. Blake Swihart, a top prospect, is a nonroster invitee.

The catchers will take batting practice after they finish their field work. Other position players who are here, including Dustin Pedroia, Mike Napoli and Xander Bogaerts, will be on another diamond, taking ground balls and fly balls and hitting.
