FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Good morning from the Fort, where there’s a new moon rising, there has been no sign of the dreaded red tide, and the fishing can’t get any worse than it was the day before, when the wind, which had been south, south, south all day long, shifted to north, roiling the waters of the Gulf.
This is the kind of stuff you learn from listening Saturday mornings to REEL Talk Radio on ESPN 99.3 in the Fort, which has become a bit of a spring training tradition for me. Someone would probably have to tell me which end of the rod you stick in the water, but for whatever reason I enjoy the back and forth between Capt. Rob Modys, the host of Reel Talk, and the other fishing guides in the area. Low-key, good-humored exchanges between a bunch of guys that seem like they’d be fun to hang with. Maybe there’s a grouper in my future after all.
But I digress. As winter storm Titan bears down on the folks back home -- how did we survive these many years without naming our winter storms? -- it’s another beautiful day for baseball in the Fort, where the Sox take on the Minnesota Twins this afternoon in Hammond Stadium.
Catcher A.J. Pierzynski will be making his first game appearance for the Sox back where it all began for him. Pierzynski was originally drafted by the Twins, in the third round in 1994, and played that year for the Gulf Coast League Twins, based here in the Fort. He also played here in 1997 with David Ortiz, who had just been traded over by the Seattle Mariners, when he was still known as David Arias.
And check out who dropped in here last night for the team’s annual casino night, benefitting the Red Sox Foundation.

Manziel is represented by the Fenway Sports Group marketing arm, as part of an agreement with LRMR, LeBron James' marketing group. He showed up for the team's workout Saturday morning.
