Farrell thinks Victorino can avoid DL

BOSTON -- Red Sox manager John Farrell offered an update on outfielder Shane Victorino, who had an MRI on his sore left knee Friday afternoon.

"There was some swelling in the joint," Farrell said after Friday's 1-0 loss to the Tigers. "We don't think this is going to be a DL situation. He'll be fitted for a brace to wear. We'll check [his availability] tomorrow."

Victorino was held out of the starting lineup for the second consecutive day Friday, after sustaining the injury on a slide into third base Tuesday night against Minnesota.

After missing the team's first 22 games battling a hamstring issue suffered on the last day of spring training, Victorino has held down the No. 2 spot in the Red Sox lineup, batting .292 with eight runs scored and nine RBIs in 15 games played.
