SEATTLE -- Red Sox manager John Farrell is not yet tipping his hand as to when the club plans to activate Clay Buchholz, which could come as soon as Wednesday night. Buchholz, who pitched six scoreless innings in a rehab start last Thursday for Pawtucket, would be pitching with an extra day’s rest if he draws Wednesday’s start against the Mariners.
Right-hander Brandon Workman’s six-game suspension ends Tuesday, but he is not in the mix to start Wednesday. Farrell said Monday afternoon that Workman will throw a simulated game here Tuesday. Felix Doubront, who started last Friday in Oakland after returning from his rehab assignment, would be pitching with regular rest if he draws Wednesday’s start.
Farrell could elect to hold Buchholz back and pitch him Friday night in New York, which would give Jon Lester and John Lackey each an extra day’s rest before starting this weekend against the Yankees. He also could pitch Buchholz Wednesday night against the Mariners, then have Doubront -- who is 1-1 with a 4.01 ERA in six career appearances (four starts) at Yankee Stadium -- open the series in New York. Or he could skip Doubront altogether.
The Sox have been playing a man short while Workman serves his suspension for throwing a pitch behind Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria. They will have to make a roster move to activate Buchholz, and are expected to make another this weekend, when Shane Victorino is a strong possibility to come off the DL and join the club in New York.
The Sox could option Rubby De La Rosa or Workman back to Pawtucket, but both have pitched well. The Sox also could elect to make a roster move with veteran left-hander Chris Capuano, who has pitched just twice since June 6.
* Victorino played Monday for Class A Lowell and went hitless in three at-bats. He is scheduled to play Tuesday for Pawtucket.
* Will Middlebrooks, who had two hits Sunday in Pawtucket, was scratched from Monday’s game with the PawSox with swelling in his finger.
* VP Mike Hazen has joined the team in Seattle, no doubt to explain the roster moves forthcoming to the players involved.
