Overshadowed just a bit by the appearance of a certain mercurial outfielder was the major-league debut of Red Sox starter Felix Doubront.
Before the game, the Sox had to clear a spot in the active roster for Doubront, and did so by designating Boof Bonser for assignment.
The 28-year-old Bonser did not record a decision while posting an 18.00 ERA (4 ER in 2.0 IPs) over two relief appearances. He missed Boston’s first 58 games of the season after landing on the disabled list on March 31 (retroactive to March 26) with a right groin strain. Acquired by the Red Sox in a trade with the Twins on Dec. 10, 2009, the right-hander also compiled a 0-2 record with a 6.34 ERA (23 ER/32.2 IP) in nine appearances (eight starts) on a rehab assignment with Pawtucket.
