Clausen's NFL career has dark cloud over it

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A day after being waived injured by the Carolina Panthers, quarterback Jimmy Clausen tweeted a picture on Sunday of dark clouds hovering over downtown Charlotte with the caption, "This storm is putting me to bed!"

Kind of fitting for a player who now has a dark cloud hovering over his NFL career.

Clausen was not claimed on Sunday, so the fourth-year quarterback returned to Carolina's injured reserve list. He will stay there for the season unless the Panthers reach an injury settlement -- which is likely -- with the former second-round draft pick out of Notre Dame.

Clausen was waived injured on Saturday as the Panthers opted to go with two quarterbacks, starter Cam Newton and backup Derek Anderson.

They were able to waive him injured because he hurt his shoulder in the final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The team has not practiced since Thursday's preseason finale. It returns to the field on Monday to begin preparation for the opener against Seattle.
