CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton acknowledges he watches in "disbelief" at what Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors do on the basketball court.
But on Sunday the tables were turned, as Newton apparently left Curry somewhat in disbelief when he went airborne at the Atlanta 3-yard line and basically dunked the ball off the helmet of a Falcons defender as the ball crossed the goal line to complete a 9-yard touchdown run.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Curry actually knows what it feels like to dunk, even though that isn't his forte. The Charlotte native is a huge Panthers fan -- and Cam Newton fan.
But quarterbacks, even 6-foot-5, 245-pound ones like Newton, don't typically dunk in games unless it's dunking the football over the goal post to celebrate a touchdown.
Newton did it in the process of scoring.
The 2015 NFL MVP hasn't talked to the two-time NBA MVP (2015-2016) about his leaping touchdown in the 20-17 victory over the Falcons, but he has seen Curry's tweet.
"From my basketball ability, I can dunk but I'd rather be able to shoot like Steph," Newton said on Wednesday. "I think we all [would]. I watch basketball in disbelief not only in what Steph does, but everybody affiliated with the Golden State Warriors.
"That team is a great unit. We try to mimic it certain times as well."
