Panthers mailbag: So you want Jackson?

The Carolina Panthers finally decided to begin free agency, filling a need for a veteran receiver with Pittsburgh Steelers free agent Jerricho Cotchery and adding several other bargain purchases.

One player that would not be a bargain is Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson. Jackson fueled fan speculation on Friday when he tweeted a picture of him and Panthers quarterback Cam Newton laughing it up at the Pro Bowl.

First, what Jackson will want salary-wise is too high. He's scheduled to get $10.25 million this season as part of a five-year deal that still has $30.5 million owed. Unless Jackson wants to come to Carolina so badly that he will take a huge pay cut, and unless the Panthers are willing to get creative with other contracts or make a big cut, there's no way that will happen. That Jackson constantly has talked about wanting more money over the years also makes me wonder if he'd be a good fit in a Carolina locker room that is all about bargains. Don't get me wrong. He's a great talent. But as the Panthers proved with the release of Steve Smith, it's not all about talent to them.

But the team still has plenty of needs, and you have plenty of questions. So let's get to my Saturday mailbag:
