Newton, who had surgery on his left ankle in March, was dressed in black formal wear despite the boot. He was one of seven NFL players who attended the event.
Newton didn't make President Obama's remarks, but Sherman did.
"Sometimes I do feel disrespected by you reporters,'' the President said. "But that’s okay. Seattle Seahawk cornerback Richard Sherman is here tonight. And he gave me some great tips on how to handle it. Jake Tapper, don’t you ever talk about me like that! I’m the best President in the game!
"What do you think, Richard? Was that good? A little more feeling next time?''
This would have been the perfect time for Obama to mimic Newton's Superman move. Maybe next time.
Newton's ultimate goal, by the way, is to be invited to the White House as a Super Bowl champion.
