Rain delays Panthers practice to 1 p.m.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- One of the reasons Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera likes scheduling morning practices at training camp is it gives him flexibility in case of bad weather.

Today is a good example.

Heavy rains forced the Panthers to move the 9:25 a.m. practice to 1 p.m., tentatively. With quarterback Cam Newton coming off ankle surgery and the overall risk of a player suffering injury on the slippery grass, Rivera apparently didn't want to risk a second straight day in the rain.

The rain, however, had nothing to do with trainers looking at Newton's leg on Thursday. He was kicked in the shin, so they removed much of the tape and added a shin guard.
