PITTSBURGH -- Nicholas Castellanos stayed hot with four hits and a key home run and the Detroit Tigers used 20 hits to outslug the Pittsburgh Pirates 13-10 on Wednesday night in the opener of a doubleheader.
Castellanos was coming off consecutive three-hit games against Kansas City. He's 10 for 15 with two homers and nine RBI in Detroit's last three games, and he's batting .337 for the season.
Candelario homered, doubled and scored five runs for Detroit. Leonys Martin led off the game with his third home run of the season, and James McCann also went deep as the Tigers won for the sixth time in eight games.
Pittsburgh has lost seven of eight. Francisco Cervelli had three hits and a career-high six RBI, including a three-run homer in the third inning. His two-run double in the eight pulled the Pirates within 12-10.
Jameson Taillon (2-2) allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. He has been tagged for 12 runs in 5 1/3 innings in losing his last two starts after pitching a combined 15 scoreless innings to win his previous two outings.
Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann lasted just three innings, giving up six runs and six hits.
Detroit added an insurance run in the ninth on a throwing error by Cervelli, the catcher, on Niko Goodrum's tapper in front between the pitcher's mound and home plate.
Castellanos' two-run shot off Kyle Crick capped a five-run fourth inning and gave the Tigers an 8-6 lead. McCann led off with his homer and Cabrera hit a two-run double in the frame.
Cervelli's single got the Pirates within 8-7 in the fifth.
However, Candelario countered with a leadoff home run in the sixth and the Tigers scored three times in the eighth to make it 12-7.
Pirates: RHP Joe Musgrove (strained right shoulder) threw a 38-pitch simulated game. He is likely to join one of the two Class A farm clubs next week to begin a rehab assignment.
Tigers LHP Matthew Boyd (0-1, 1.40 ERA) faces Pirates RHP Chad Kuhl (2-1, 4.57) in the second game. Both teams can add an extra player for the nightcap. Detroit will call up RHP Artie Lewicki from Triple-A Toledo while Pittsburgh will recall INF/OF Jose Osuna from Triple-A Indianapolis.
