CLEVELAND -- Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo met with the media Thursday in the press box at Browns Stadium. Here are a few highlights from that session:
The Bears will keep three quarterbacks (Jay Cutler, Todd Collins, Caleb Hanie) and four tight ends (Greg Olsen, Desmond Clark, Brandon Manumaleuna, Kellen Davis) on the final 53-man roster, according to Angelo. Rookie quarterback Dan LeFevour, a sixth-round pick, appears to be headed to the practice squad.
Angelo maintains it will be difficult for rookie Major Wright to start at safety next Sunday against Detroit."That will be a coaches call, and if he's starting then obviously they feel he's ready to start, but it's tough because of the missed time," Angelo said. "He was on course to maybe be that exception to the rule as a rookie and come in here and start. Safety is a tough position to start at. It's not like corner. There's a lot more going on in terms of learning and adjusting. But as long as he's out there practicing, he'll get play time and we'll see where it'll go."
But if Wright is medically cleared next week it will be difficult for the coaches to keep him off the field.
Angelo was on-board with the idea of Cutler sitting out the preseason finale. He felt Cutler played well in his final drive last week versus the Arizona Cardinals, and Collins really needed the work.
Because of all the injuries this summer at safety -- Wright, Craig Steltz, Josh Bullocks -- the Bears may have to keep an extra safety on the 53-man roster. That certainly bodes well for Bullocks or Al Afalava. But keeping an additional safety means cutting a good player, perhaps special teams ace Tim Shaw.
Angelo called the pass protection problems "a concern", but pointed out the Bears are trying out new things out on offense and defense. "We need to figure out who we are," Angelo said. He used the same philosophy when discussing all the defensive breakdowns on third and long.
Newly signed offensive lineman Edwin Williams will not make the 53-man roster, but is likely ticketed for the practice squad.
