LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall was fined $5,250 for throwing the football into the stands following his 15-yard touchdown reception last Sunday in the club’s 21-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers, an NFL source confirmed on Friday.
$5,250 is the standard fine amount for the infraction, according to the source.
The league took issue with Marshall’s action because he threw the ball high up into the stands, as opposed to handing the ball or tossing it to a fan, both of which are allowed. The NFL discourages players from throwing the ball in that manner because it could create a fan safety issue. The league wants to avoid fans fighting over a football or diving over one another to retrieve it.
