CHICAGO -- Chicago Bears players reacted with a mixture of surprise and sadness upon learning about defensive end Gaines Adams' sudden passing. Since most of Adam's teammates were hearing the news for the first time when contacted by ESPNChicago.com, they asked to remain anonymous until more information became available.

"I just can't believe it, I didn't know the guy very well, but he was always friendly," one Bears veteran recalled. "I really don't know who he was tight with, but he seemed to get a long very well with [fellow defensive end] Mark Anderson. The whole thing is just crazy."

"Life is too short," another veteran said. "He was a great guy. Maybe a little quiet, but a good guy."

"That's unreal," one defensive starter said in a text message. "I just watched a short clip about the story on the internet. Wow."

"I just saw it on the ESPN news ticker. Wow," another defensive starter said. "We're just waiting to hear from the Bears."

The Bears released this statement regarding Adams' death:

“We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines’ passing. Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
