Here is the fifth in a 10-part series examining the top 10 players on the Chicago Bears' 2015 offseason roster.
Name: Martellus Bennett
Position: Tight end
Experience: Seven years
2015 base salary: $4.9 million
2014 recap: Bennett finished last season ranking first in catches (90), third in yards (916) and tied for seventh in touchdown receptions (six) amongst NFL tight ends. He was second on the team in catches behind only Matt Forte (102). Bennett had 12 receptions in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 4 -- the second-highest total ever by a Bears tight end in a single game. His 90 catches are the most ever by a Chicago tight end in a single season. At 6-foot-6, 265 pounds, Bennett is extremely difficult to tackle in the open field. A total of 478 of Bennett's 916 total receiving yards occurred after contact, the third highest total of any tight end in the league in 2014.
2015 outlook: Bennett missed the majority of the club's offseason program over a contract dispute, but he's expected to report to training camp on time. With all the skill position players at new offense coordinator Adam Gase's disposal, Bennett may not catch 90 passes again this season. However, he's likely to remain one of quarterback Jay Cutler's primary targets in the passing game, and is already one of the club's best weapons inside the red zone. Bennett clearly wants a new contract, so his motivation to succeed should not be an issue in 205. While the odds of him receiving more money from Chicago seem slim, he needs another productive year to impress the rest of the NFL in the event the Bears deal him next offseason. If this is indeed Bennett's final year in a Bears' uniform, he better make it a good one.
