Lovie's son/agent joins IMG

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith will be represented by a new agency, but the same agent -- his son -- if he negotiates a contract extension after this season.

Smith's son, Matthew Smith, joined IMG Worldwide, which is one of the largest sports management firms in the world.

"For me, first as a proud dad, as you pick an agent, you need someone you can trust that has your back at all times," Smith said Monday on WBBM-AM (670). "Matthew has been around the business a long time, of course being around football, so we're excited about it."

The 26-year-old Smith helped his father sign a two-year contract extension in February, 2011.

"People might assume that IMG only hired me to get to my father," Matthew Smith told the Chicago Tribune. "I can only continue to work as hard as I can, like I did in school and at my internships, to make the most out of the opportunities afforded to me."

Bears general manager Phil Emery said when he took the job before this season that he was told Smith would be the head coach and then Emery can decide after the season if he wants to go in a different direction.

Emery has said he wants to wait until after the season to decide Smith's fate.

The Bears take a 4-1 record into Monday night's game against the Detroit Lions.
