First period wrap: Hawks 2, Canes 1

The Chicago Blackhawks lead the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 after the first period at the United Center.

The Hawks’ top line picked up where it left off in recent games, scoring on the first shift of the night. Again, it was Jonathan Toews with the goal after he stole the puck from behind, getting it to Patrick Sharp. Sharp got it back to Toews, in the slot, for his sixth in four games and 26th overall.

The Canes tied the game less than six minutes later when a poor passing play between Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson, inside the Carolina zone, resulted in a break the other way. Eric Staal scored as the trailer on the rush.

The Hawks regained the lead after a good shift by Dave Bolland’s line. With some time and space after a Hurricanes’ defenseman lost his stick, Brent Seabrook was able to step into a shot which hit the post. Bryan Bickell was in good position for the rebound goal, his 15th.

The Hurricanes had just five shots on net, the Hawks nine.
