Rapid Reaction: Hawks 3, Panthers 2 (SO)

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Here's a quick look at the Hawks shootout win in Florida on Thursday.

How it happened: Patrick Kane's backhand was the lone shootout goal, giving the Hawks a victory against a Florida roster full of familiar foes. The Hawks got a lead but couldn’t hold on to it in regulation. They were outplayed in the first period but led thanks to Corey Crawford and a goal by Jonathan Toews. Kane played magician yet again, finding Marian Hossa for a score in the second, and though the game remained tight the Hawks had the lead until the final moments of regulation. Stephen Weiss tallied for the Panthers late in the second and the Hawks were caught in their own zone for much of the third eventually giving up the tying score with about two minutes to play.

What it means: The Hawks keep chugging along, improving to 8-2-2 and starting a new month in fine fashion. Playing without Duncan Keith, they gave up a season high in shots while Sean O’Donnell played a season high in minutes. Corey Crawford was good and had to be facing so many shots. The Hawks pulled one out again but should have had an easier time after taking a 2-0 lead.

What’s next: A quick flight to Tampa Bay comes right after the game as the Hawks will conclude their mini road-trip against the Lightning on Friday night.
