Teravainen questionable to join Hawks this season

Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said Friday he was unsure whether forward Teuvo Teravainen would play in the NHL later this season.

The 19-year-old Teravainen signed a three-year contract with the Blackhawks in August. He is currently playing for Jokerit in the SM-liiga. He could play for the Blackhawks this season after he's finished with his season in Finland.

“I’m not planning on it, but it would be a bonus if he’s done with his season,” Bowman said in a phone interview Friday. “That’s an option. He’s signed. I think there are a lot of factors that go into it -- when his season ends and where he’s at that point.”

Bowman has spoken highly of Teravainen since the Blackhawks selected him with No. 18 overall pick in the 2012 draft. The Blackhawks got an extended look at Teravainen during the preseason. He appeared in two preseason games and often played on the team’s top line before returning to Finland.

Teravainen has three goals and 13 assists in 25 games for Jokerit this season.

Bowman said Blackhawks player development director Barry Smith has visited Teravainen in Finland once already this season, and Bowman said he watches Teravainen’s game tape.

“I think with Teuvo he’s obviously got a lot of talent,” Bowman said. “We’re really excited what he brings to the table.”
