Rapid Reaction: Blackhawks 5, Devils 3

NEWARK, N.J. -- A quick look at the Chicago Blackhawks’ 5-3 win over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night at Prudential Center.

How it happened: Patrick Sharp had his second hat trick in five games, while Brandon Saad and Marian Hossa each added a goal.

Co-Rookie of the Month for December Antti Raanta made 24 saves to earn the win. His best one came 9:19 into the second period when he made a glove save to rob Stephen Gionta on a breakaway.

Saad snapped a 1-all tie 90 seconds into the final frame when he deflected home Patrick Kane’s backhanded pass from the right-wing boards for his 15th goal of the season.

Just 70 seconds later, Sharp notched his second of the game from an impossible angle at the side of the net.

Hossa (15th goal) broke a seven-game scoring drought when he roofed a wrist-shot to make it 4-1 at 5:34.

The Devils would get within 4-3, but Sharp completed his hat trick with 1:28 left when he deked Martin Brodeur and scored on a breakaway to put the game away. Sharp ended the night with his 25th goal of the season

Sharp opened the scoring early in the second period with a snap shot from the high slot off a drop pass from Jonathan Toews. Toews and Brent Seabrook each had two assists, while Duncan Keith registered three assists.

Marek Zidlicky scored twice for the Devils, while Greene also tallied a score. Brodeur made 19 saves.

What it means: The Blackhawks improved to 29-7-8 and have earned at least a point in nine consecutive games (6-0-3). They came away from their two-game East Coast road trip with three points out of a possible four.

Player of the game: Sharp’s top-end skills were on full display. The 32-year-old left wing is an absolute star.

Stat of the game: It took the Devils 11 minutes, 34 seconds to register their first shot of the game. But they ended up outshooting the Blackhawks 8-6 in the first period.

What’s next: The Blackhawks return home Sunday night to face the San Jose Sharks in a clash of Western Conference powers at United Center.
