Cubs' Soto closing in on Monday return

CHICAGO – Injured Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto was behind the plate for five more innings Wednesday at Triple-A Iowa and is ready to move to the next stage of his rehabilitation.

The plan is to get Soto to nine innings behind the plate by Sunday which could possibly get him back on the major-league roster by the start of the cross-town series Monday at U.S. Cellular Field against the White Sox.

Soto has been out since May 17 after suffering a partially torn meniscus in his left knee. He underwent an arthroscopic procedure to correct the problem.

“He's kind of back in spring training mode to where he needs to get some at-bats and maybe get some things figured out too,” manager Dale Sveum said. “He wasn't swinging the bat all that good before he got hurt so it'd be nice to make an adjustment and hopefully it works out down there.”
