ATLANTA -- Ryan Dempster came out of his last bullpen session feeling just fine, but a decision on when he returns to the rotation won’t be made until Friday.
The Chicago Cubs are weighing the possibility of Dempster returning from his sore right latissimus dorsi muscle Sunday against the Mets in New York.
They have acknowledged a certain risk that comes with moving up his return date, but so far those risks seem minimal.
Dempster said that because of the extremely warm temperatures expected in New York this weekend he will be able to get loose. And Cubs manager Dale Sveum has said that it helps that the game is the final one before the All-Star break so that Dempster can work with a low pitch count and nearly the entire pitching staff can back him up out of the bullpen.
If Dempster does pitch Sunday, right-hander Chris Volstad is expected to return to Triple-A Iowa.
