CHICAGO – The Cubs announced Wednesday they have claimed right-hander Carlos Gutierrez off waivers from the Minnesota Twins, while catcher was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
Gutierrez, whose 2012 season was cut short by a shoulder injury, was a former first-round draft pick in 2008. Primarily used in relief, Gutierrez has posted a 15-20 record with a 4.11 ERA over 136 appearances in the last five seasons.
The University of Miami product made just 10 appearances this past season before a June shoulder injury eventually led to surgery. He began a rehab throwing program earlier this month.
Recker, who was acquired from the A’s in a trade this past season, played in nine games with the Cubs, collecting one home run and four RBIs.
