NASHVILLE -- The Chicago Cubs have some interest in veteran infielder Yuniesky Betancourt, according to a source close to the situation. The free-agent shortstop last played for the Kansas City Royals in 2012 but was released in August.
The Cubs would be interested in Betancourt playing third base as shortstop is occupied by Starlin Castro. Betancourt hit .228 with seven home runs and 36 runs batted in, in 57 games for the Royals last season.
The eight-year veteran is a career .266 hitter with a .290 on-base percentage. He does have some pop for a middle infielder, hitting 29 home runs combined in 2011 and 2012.
