Garza, who has not pitched off a mound since Feb. 17 when he injured his right side during a side session, is continuing his long-toss program and is throwing every other day.
Garza missed the last the last two months of the 2012 season with elbow soreness.
The Cubs will have another round of cuts on Friday. Bullpen spots could be the focus of this round of cuts. The Cubs will carry seven relief pitchers and five starters.
The Cubs and Padres traveled to Tucson for the Christina-Taylor Green Foundation Fundraiser game. The foundation formed by the young girl's parents John and Roxanna Green has raised $500,000 for local and national funding for the causes of grade school girls and young women. Green was shot and killed by a gunman in Tucson during a rally for Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords in January, 2011. John Green is a baseball scout. He is the son of former Cubs general manager Dallas Green.
Scott Baker will have his sore elbow examined Saturday by team orthopedic specialist Stephen Gryzlo in Mesa. Baker aggravated his surgically repaired elbow in a Cactus League start March 17.
