Guccione called an outside borderline pitch by Jeff Samardzija to Ryan Braun a ball, prompting Samardzija to yell towards home plate. That’s when Guccione ripped off his mask and stared back at the Cubs pitcher.
“As far as I was concerned you can have a little emotion out there about some calls,” Samardzija said afterwards. “I didn’t think I did anything out of line. I made a comment and that was it and he decided to show me up from behind the plate.”
Sveum came out of the dugout furious with Guccione.
“That’s not acceptable when a guy is out there competing and somebody rips his mask off for one pitch,” Sveum said. “It’s not like he was (complaining) about 8 or 10 pitches during the ball game.”
Sveum actually had discussions with the umpires earlier in the game when they claimed Samardzija might not be stepping towards first base on his pick-off throws, though no balk was called on him. Then came the sixth-inning confrontation.
“For him to rip his mask off, it’s not acceptable,” Sveum said again.
Samardzija was asked if there was any cursing involved in the back-and-forth.
“I don’t know,” he responded. “We’d have to go back to the tape on that one.
It was Sveum’s first ejection of the season and fifth of his career.
