Pirates pounce on Dempster

The Cubs' Ryan Dempster recorded his shortest outing of the season on Tuesday night, lasting three innings in a 14-7 loss to the Pirates.

It was also his shortest outing since June 27, 2008, vs. the White Sox. Dempster is 0-3 with a 6.88 ERA against the Pirates on the year.

  • Outfielder Marlon Byrd was hobbled during the game with an obvious leg injury. When approached after the game, Byrd said he was fine, and refused to admit there was anything wrong with his leg. Interim manager Mike Quade also noted Byrd’s obvious struggles on Tuesday night, saying he would rest the center-fielder on Wednesday.
