Samardzija puts Chicago home up for sale

MESA, Ariz. -- Pitcher Jeff Samardzija putting a home he owns in Chicago up for sale has no correlation to his future with the Chicago Cubs, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Samardzija listed a three-bedroom condominium in Lakeview for nearly $700,000 but a source says the pitcher hasn't lived there in several years. A teammate had been renting it out, but that's no longer the case, according to the source.

Samardzija has been the subject of trade rumors for over a year as he and the Cubs have been unable to come to an agreement on a long-term deal. The two sides narrowly avoided salary arbitration earlier this year when he signed a one-year deal for $5.345 million. Samardzija has one more season of arbitration before he's set to become a free agent after 2015.

If the sides can't agree on a multi-year contract there's a good chance Samardzija will be traded long before he hits the open market. That could happen as the regular season approaches next week but more likely will occur closer to the trade deadline on July 31.
