How it Happened: Anthony Rizzo started the scoring when he doubled home two runs in a five-run third inning. Starlin Castro followed with his 11th home run of the season, a three-run shot. The Pirates got three back when Jordy Mercer went deep in the fifth after Edwin Jackson walked back-to-back hitters on eight pitches. But Chris Coghlan homered in the bottom of the inning to extend Cubs' the lead, and the bullpen shut down the Pirates over the final four innings. Hector Rondon notched his eighth save.
What it means: Castro is making a case to be an All-Star as he has already surpassed his home run total (11 to 10) from all of last year while being one off his RBI production (44 to 43). Rizzo might join him as he continues to respond with men on base, unlike last season when he struggled mightily in those situations.
The Cubs won their first game at home after a long trip -- not always an easy task -- and are 16-14 at Wrigley Field this season.
Coghlan's day: Coghlan tripled, homered and walked batting second in the Cubs' lineup.
