Here’s a quick look at the Cubs’ Cactus League loss to Oakland on Thursday.
The Good: Righty Ryan Dempster became the team’s first starter to go six innings during spring training. Dempster allowed two runs on four hits. The Cubs’ power returned Thursday as Geovany Soto, Alfonso Soriano and Reed Johnson all homered. Johnson’s homer was his first of the spring as he broke out of a 4-for-29 slump.
The bad: Setup men Kerry Wood and Sean Marshall had rough outings. Wood gave up a run in the eighth inning while Marshall surrendered three in the ninth for the loss. Outfielder Fernando Perez dropped a fly ball in the ninth to help fuel Oakland’s rally.
Outside the box: Lefty John Grabow made his first relief appearance since Feb. 27. He pitched one inning and allowed one hit. The Cubs veteran pitcher had experienced left-shoulder soreness since his first appearance of the spring.
